Privacy Policy

1. Who We Are
Backgammon Zone ("we", "us", "our") operates the website backgammonzone.net and the Backgammon Zone mobile app (together, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights in relation to it. Where the website and the app differ, this policy says so.
For any privacy-related questions or requests please contact us at privacy@backgammonzone.net.
2. Information We Collect
Information you provide
Backgammon Zone does not require account registration. We do not collect names, email addresses, or any other personally identifiable information unless you contact us directly by email. If you email us, we will retain your message and email address solely to respond to your enquiry.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our server may log standard technical information such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, and pages visited. This data is used exclusively for security monitoring and aggregate traffic analysis. It is not sold or shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
Local storage
The game saves your preferences (AI level, AI speed, chosen colour, match target, animation settings) and your game against the computer to your browser's localStorage. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us.
Playing with a friend
Games against the computer are played entirely in your browser and send nothing anywhere. When you choose to play with a friend, the game connects to our multiplayer server so the two of you can share a board. While that game is running, the server holds the position, the score, the dice it rolls, a random six-character room code, a random identifier for your seat, and the nickname you typed if you typed one. That nickname is shown to your opponent.
We do not ask for an account, an email address or any other personal detail to play. The room and everything in it is deleted automatically after 24 hours without activity, and you can leave a game at any time. Your opponent never sees your IP address; only our server does, as with any request to the site.
3. Cookies
Backgammon Zone does not use tracking cookies or marketing cookies. The only browser storage we use is localStorage (see above), which is not a cookie and is not transmitted with HTTP requests.
The website does not serve advertising and sets no advertising cookies. The mobile app is ad-supported: it shows occasional full-screen ads supplied by Google AdMob between games. AdMob does not use browser cookies, but it does use mobile advertising identifiers and similar technologies — see section 4.
4. Third-Party Services
We currently use the following third-party services:
- Hosting provider — our hosting provider may process server logs containing IP addresses for security and operational purposes, governed by their own privacy policy.
- GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform) — a JavaScript animation library loaded as part of our application bundle. It does not collect any user data.
- Google AdMob (mobile app only) — the advertising service that supplies the ads shown between games. To select and measure those ads it may process your device's advertising identifier (the IDFA on iOS) along with device, network and approximate location information, and it may share that data with Google's advertising partners. It is not used on the website. See how Google uses data from sites and apps that use its services.
On iOS, the app asks for your permission before using the advertising identifier to track you across apps and websites, and in the EEA and the UK it asks for your consent through Google's certified consent form before serving personalised ads. If you decline either, you still get the same game — the ads are simply non-personalised. Where that consent applies you can reopen the form and change or withdraw it at any time from Ad privacy in the app's settings menu, and you can change your tracking choice under Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking on your device.
We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any other behavioural tracking service, and the website carries no advertising or tracking of any kind.
5. Data Retention
Server logs, if retained, are kept for no longer than 30 days. Email correspondence is retained only as long as necessary to resolve your enquiry and is then deleted.
A game you play with a friend is deleted automatically after 24 hours without activity, together with its room code, its position and any nickname you gave. We keep no history of finished games.
6. Your Rights
Depending on your country of residence, you may have the following rights under applicable data protection law (including the GDPR where applicable):
- The right to access personal data we hold about you
- The right to rectification of inaccurate data
- The right to erasure ("right to be forgotten")
- The right to restriction of processing
- The right to data portability
- The right to object to processing
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at privacy@backgammonzone.net. We will respond within 30 days.
7. Children's Privacy
Backgammon Zone is a general-audience website. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
